dying man needs airplane ride to playa

long time burner, Bill Weir, has brain cancer and hasn't much time left in this life. His "dying wish" is to make it to BM this year. We thought he'd be able to make the drive, but he will not be able to. He founded the Black Rock Yacht Club, and camp members are trying to find a way for him to be picked up at Oakland Airport, flown to the playa on Tues. 9/1, we have a golf cart to get him to our camp (8:30 & outer edge), he'd spend the night, and be flown back to Oakland sometime on Wed. Is there anyone is the pilot community that would consider being a part of this effort? If so, you would help make Bill's wishes come true. Please contact Jim Pettigrew at 415-307-5143 or email: jimp@sfsu.edu. Thank you!! Have a great burn!

Room for 3 passengers? Portland to ze Playa...

Hello aviators!

I hope that sending this message to all of you is OK and that this works...it was the best way I could glean from various sources and researching how to fly as a passenger to Burning Man! Please let me know if there are better or more effective ways to find and contact y'all. (I also posted this on the aviators-list board).

I am looking for space for three people to fly from the Portland, Oregon area to the Playa with an aviator who is flying out of anywhere in Oregon or Washington (preferably Portland/Vancouver (WA)-Salem-Eugene area) to the Burn and, ideally, who is making a short but sweet trip (say, Thursday, Friday or Saturday through Sunday or Monday). The group of three could conceivably be split into 2 and 1, if someone has room for only two people or one person--as long as they all get there.

Your passengers would be veteran burners, uber-contributors and stellar humans Kurt (DJ Global Ruckus, whose presence on the Playa has been requested by many), his newlywed wife Sija (of Black Rock Ranger, Airport Customs, MonkeyPuzzle, Woonami Village and the Mobile Groove Bomb notoriety) and Matty V., (also of MonkeyPuzzle/Bomb Squad/Mobile Groove Bomb renown, and my sweetie who I met on Burn night last year-it would be our anniversary (awww!)).

Due to reality-based challenges, these three wonderful Burners were going to have to miss the Burn this year. But if you have the ability, space and inclination, they could circumvent these annoying hurdles (time, money, work...) and make it to the Burn! In a timely, amazing, stylish/rock star fashion, no less. Of course, fuel costs and expenses would be gladly compensated.

Please advise if you are this special hero, or if you have any helpful information, ideas and/or advice about getting these deserving people out to the Playa.

Many thanks,

Heather "Bomb-Ass" Baker

One Year Later

well, it's been nealy a year since my last post here. quite a bit has happened.

since returning from peru most of the BWB crew reported a high incidence of Peace Corps Syndrome - wherein you just can't seem to work up the energy to care about the trvialities and excess of life back home. have to admit i brought home a big dose of it myself.

re-entry was hard but with the help of Ballistic Bob, our tribe's moderator and one of the most generous and helpful people on earth, i managed to weather the storm. many other friends stepped in to help out when i was struggling as well; Agent Saviour, Erika, Hawk, the infamous Meshugganah, and many others. muchas gracias!

After the rigors of 2008 and the less-than-graceful crash landing back into the USA, 2009 has brought me my all-time dream, living and working in Africa as a bush pilot! It has been quite the adventure and i am just about 4 weeks away from completing all my route training which is the last hurdle to flying solo into the various safari camps. i should be a full-on line pilot by the end of may.

so many of you have been a part of the years-long course i charted to get me here, dating back to my first flight over BRC with Crazy 6-Seater Roger, that i thought it would be nice to let you know that I DID IT!!

i'm leaving tomm morning for a 7-day excursion into 6 different camps including the largest game preserve in the country. this will be my first chance to get fotos of wildlife, since my other route training flights have been mostly ferrying people and cargo with a quick return flight. this time i get to stay in the camps, take part in the activities and live a little. can't wait.

as most of you know, i left tribe and went over to Facebook. i hope some of you will stop by and visit me over there in online suburbia, where i will post safari pics. i miss tribe at times, but the technical issues are such a drag and my friend list now includes more international than US peeps, so FB has become the answer.

obviously BM09 is not gonna happen for me. but i know that Saviour will do his best to ensure N99TA makes an appearance at the big dusty, and that the Spaceport will be the same center for debaucherous fun and frivolity it has always been. i'll be thinking of you all this Labor Day weekend. Enjoy!!

Hello, I know someone who is considering landing his Gulfstream G4 at Black Rock City, and is willing to be arrange for grading for the landing strip to be extended. The question remains whether the playa is a safe landing surface and more importantly, a safe takeoff surface. Gulfstream has been consulted with and they are still awaiting their reply. Any input would be appreciated -
Has anyone ever done this before?

Art Proposal- An  invitation

Greetings,

I have submitted a proposal to the BRC for consideration. Take a look and tell me what you think.

http://home.mountaincable.net/~mtn1248434/

I know it's not even a 'real' website yet. The whole thing is still in the development stage.

What this project is:

A full scale model of the solar system based on the 1,000 yard model. In this scale model, the Sun is a basketall, and the Earth is a peppercorn. Everyday ordinary objects are used instead of colored balls of the same size so that people have a more accurate basis of comparison. The impressive thing about this project is not the installations themselves, so much as the empty space that exists between the installations.

For example, the planet Pluto is the size of a pin but it is almost half a mile away from the Sun!

What I am looking for are:

Twenty teams of people to help with this project. Each team chooses or gets assigned a 'station' to work on such as Jupiter, the Kuiper belt, the heliopause region and so forth. The project is extremely ambitious in it's aims and scope, but if I can get twenty teams of five to work on each station and transport it the whole thing becomes achievable.

My intentions with this project are to entertain people and educate them at the same time. One of my objectives is to alert people to both the dangers AND the promise presented by near Earth asteroids. Another is to stimulate the stagnant economy again and create purposeful employment in high tech fields such as the Aerospace industry.

This is a map of Near Earth Asteroids. The ones in red have the potential for hitting our planet.

http://szyzyg.arm.ac.uk/~spm/

THREAT: As they are now, these Asteroids are like the sword of Damocles waiting to descend from the skies and wipe out a city, or possibly the whole human race. The potential of a terrorist organization redirecting the trajectory of an asteroid into a target of their choosing is even greater. After all, the technology to leave the planet is over fifty years old now. Any intercontinental missile is also capable of being fired into space. When the Soviet Union went bankrupt, it sold off this technology to the highest bidder.

PROMISE: In order to stop an asteroid you have to intercept it. Hitting it with a missile doesn't work, since it just breaks one big problem into lots of smaller problems. Once you intercept it, you can change it's trajectory. You also have the opportunity to transform it into a colony, or mine it for metals.

Presently, the United States has a deficit of about a Trillion dollars. The good news is that even one of the smaller asteroids (3554 Amun) has a mineral value confirmed to be worth =Ten Trillion dollars=. So, invest a trillion in space exploration, asteroid colonization and mining, and make yourself an 8 Trillion dollar surplus (or profit) with a space colony (or space ship) to boot.

As the entire planet now enters into a Global depression, world governments are scrambling to start up 'make work' projects to keep people pacified. Why send people to paint a wall ten times a day when you could create genuine employment fulfilling mankind's greatest ambition, the colonization of space?

Right now as it is, the human race has all it's eggs in one basket. If something should happen on the to affect life on the planet Earth (Nuclear war, Bio-Terrorism, Asteroids, you name it), unless we have a 'back-up' then we are all doomed. If you capture, mine, and colonize the Near Earth Asteroids you solve several problems at once. Not only have you now saved half a million years of human civilization, you have also alleviated the enviromental stress we are placing on the planet by putting the heavily polluting industries in orbit around the planet.

http://lifeboat.com/ex/asteroid.shield

This is a page taken from the Lifeboat foundation, a 'think tank' organization devoted to solving the exponentially increasing threats facing human civilization. 'Asteroid shield' is one of these programs. There are dozens of others. The Lifeboat foundation has a half a million dollars to invest in projects designed to save the whole human race. I think that this art project would qualify for some of that funding. Of course, the project has to go somewhere.

The overall scope of the project is ambitious, but if it is broken down over twenty teams it becomes something which is achievable. Each station is no larger than a bus shelter. The most expensive part of the project are the blinky lights and the El-wire. If viewed from a plane, this project would make a spectacular scale model of our ENTIRE solar system including Sedna, Eris, The Oort cloud and so on. Arguably, each station is small enough to be easily managed, constructed and deconstructed quickly. Also even without funding, each station is well within the means of affordability.

It's not what EXISTS in this piece, but all the space between the things that exist which make people think about it.

Thanks for looking,

James

I won't be able be on the Playa this year . If you, or someone you know, is interested in running the breakfast, please drop me a line ASAP. Time is running very short. A few things - such as getting the health permit - have a built-in lead time, and there just isn't much of that left.

Fly Michael Beckwith to BM?

Hi everyone,

I am trying to get Rev./Dr. Michael Beckwith to Burning Man to speak at Entheon Village on Saturday, Aug. 30th. If you're not familiar with who he is, he was in the movie "The Secret" and is the founder of the Agape International Spiritual Center in Los Angeles (www.agapelive.com). He's awesome! I've been working on this project idea for months.

After a lot of back & forth & working with schedules, he and his wife Rickie Byars Beckwith have agreed to come and do an Agape service. This is soooo exciting, and will be huge out there! The only problem is, they can only make it if they fly in on Saturday morning, and leave later that same day (late afternoon or early evening, I would imagine). They both have crazy busy schedules. So, logistically, the only way to make this work is to fly them into BRC directly.

Is there anyone that could possibly help with this? It would be incredibly awesome to have them flown btw. Los Angeles & BRC directly. But I'm also willing to look into Los Angeles - Reno - BRC, if that could make this happen.

I'm working with a HUGE DEADLINE on several fronts, so I need to get this figured out ASAP. If you could possibly help with this, please contact me as soon as possible by direct email (in case tribe goes down), and we can discuss what would need to happen to make this work. I'm open.

Thank you so much for your consideration!
Looking for ride to BRC from Bay Area approx Wednesday aug 27, come back sun aug 31 or mon sept 1.

Hello there. My husband is a long time burning Man artist, and he is looking for a plane to ride to BRC and back.
He is in the Bay Area and can travel to any reasonable airport. His timing is flexible, are probably would want to leave Wednesday aug 27, come back sun aug 31 or mon sept 1.

He has money to help out with gas, and can make sure to bring himself and only an overnight bag -- all of his food and camp belongings and our car will be going up separately.

He weighs about 180 pounds, and is a wonderful, intelligent man. I'm sure you would appreciate meeting him and sharing your precious plane hours with him.

If you have a plane, and you are interested in sharing some of the cost of flying, please send me a message

Please, if you respond, be serious and responsible -- please don't flake out on us at the last minute! He could also do a one way ride to burning Man, and probably get a ride back.

He also has an art car, and I'm sure would love to trade some fun in the plane for fun on the playa cruising around.

Thanks
Sad News about Farmer Jim

>Last week James Hollin passed away from liver/pancreatic cancer. He was
>well known to many of us as Farmer Jim. He was a 7 year veteran of the
>aviation family of Blackrock City who shared many rides with fellow burners.
>He would always arrive on Monday and stay for the entire event. He was a
>true participant, as a playboy cleverly disguised as a farmer he would
>always be on the lookout for young ladies to fly with him to Winnemucca for
>a hour of gambling or a trip to Alvord.

>He will be missed be all

Some of my fondest memories of the Phoenix Lounge were sitting talking farming and women with Jim. I remember one time someone showed him a photo of himself with a beautiful bare chested woman with her arm around him and he said "I don't remember that!" I guess there were just too many to remember! A true playboy and a wonderful, intelligent man. It won't be the same without him.

FIDO.

I wish I had the ability to write to every one of you personally, but access here is slow and spotty and I have to share the connection with others. It’s not my style to send out blanket letters and certainly not on a subject so personal. Please accept my apologies.

And with equal earnest, I ask you all to accept my humble thanks for the amazing generosity you have shown in supporting my project here in Peru. I just got to my email again this afternoon immediately after returning from my first visit to the site where we hope to build a home for the Pisconte family.

I drove out to a semi-rural settlement on the edge of Pisco today to review the site and take measurements. It was the first time I saw how and where they live. It was difficult, to say the least, and I left there wondering how I would ever manage to effect any real change in the lives of people struggling so hard against such steep odds. Like most pilots, I like to think of myself as a person who accomplishes things, and succeeds at what I start. However, I drove back to camp worrying that I would fail at what is surely one of the most important things I have ever undertaken. How could I actually pull this off? Who am I to think that I can pull a small family out of the dirt and garbage of a disaster zone and provide them with a home?

Then I saw your letters.

I realize now that I am one of the most privileged men on the planet. I get to represent the BM Aviation community. I get to be the point man who directs the energy and love of a group of friends and family who care about a bigger and better world. I get to deliver the actual, physical manifestation of God’s mercy to a poor family.

I could never have done this alone. That’s the lesson I learned from this project. And when help was needed, this community responded. I’m humbled to know that you all trust me enough with your money, love and good intentions. I’m going to bed tonite with the confidence that I have your support, and that I will succeed. Because failure is not an option. And we’re never really alone.

I posted a few pics on tribe today. Feel free to peruse them, and look for more in the weeks to come.

Besos y Abrazos.

Hi,

This year, time is the obstacle for me in getting to the burn. I really need to fly in from L.A. Thursday 8/30 would be best. I will certainly make it worth my pilot's time and trouble to let me be a passenger. Anyone going my way?

Thanks,
Francis
So who's flying in this year?
I'm a student pilot just moments away from my solo! It's my third year on the playa and I'd love to meet some follow playa flyers.

Hi All,
I am flying on a rental plane from GNOSS airport in Novato, Ca (30
minutes north of SF on US 101) to the playa on Wed morning (9am?) and
returning Monday morning (9am?).
I have one seat available in a Cessna 172 and a little bit of room and
weight for luggage. There will be 3 of us total.
Total round trip cost of the rental is $600 so it's $200 per person.
This is my second year flying to the playa, last year was a blast. (9th
year to the playa altogether).
Hopefully the weather will cooperate, because of course this is weather
permitting.
Cheers,
Bernard (aka Lola in the Sky...)
415-505-0091

ps: and of course u do need to have your own B-Man ticket.

Wondering if AIr Force One has PANTS OFF?

AOPA ePilot Special Airspace Bulletin August 24, 2007
-------------------------------------------------------------------

A special notice to pilots in the western Nevada area

==> ATTENTION PILOTS <==

FAA TO ESTABLISH TFR OVER RENO ON MONDAY AND TUESDAY
AOPA is sending this message to advise pilots in and near Reno, Nevada,
that the FAA has issued a notam restricting flight in the area during
President Bush's planned overnight visit from Monday, August 27,
through Tuesday, August 28.

There will be a large 30-nautical-mile-radius temporary flight
restriction (TFR) centered on the FMG VOR's 234-degree radial at 5.5
miles, extending up to Flight Level 180. It will be in effect
from 6:55 p.m. local on Monday until 1:25 p.m. local on Tuesday. Also,
there will be a smaller 10-nm-radius GA no-fly zone in effect within
the larger TFR during that time frame. See AOPA Online for the full
text of the notam along with a graphical depiction
( http://www.aopa.org/whatsnew/notams.html#7/4562 ).

The affected landing facilities are Reno/Tahoe International (RNO),
Spanish Springs (N86), Reno/Stead (4SD), Parker Carson (2Q5), Carson
(CXP), Dayton Valley Airpark (A34), Truckee-Tahoe (TRK), Silver Springs
(B08), Tiger Field (N58), Sierraville Dearwater (O79), and
Minden-Tahoe (MEV).

Because TFR airspace frequently changes, AOPA strongly encourages
pilots to obtain a briefing and CHECK NOTAMS before every flight.
TFR violators will be intercepted and forced to land.

Here's what Voyager is broadcasting to the universe on the Golden Record.

Song list:
http://voyager.jpl.nasa.gov/spacecraft/music.html

http://voyager.jpl.nasa.gov/spacecraft/goldenrec.html

Pioneers 10 and 11, which preceded Voyager, both carried small metal plaques identifying their time and place of origin for the benefit of any other spacefarers that might find them in the distant future. With this example before them, NASA placed a more ambitious message aboard Voyager 1 and 2-a kind of time capsule, intended to communicate a story of our world to extraterrestrials. The Voyager message is carried by a phonograph record-a 12-inch gold-plated copper disk containing sounds and images selected to portray the diversity of life and culture on Earth. The contents of the record were selected for NASA by a committee chaired by Carl Sagan of Cornell University. Dr. Sagan and his associates assembled 115 images and a variety of natural sounds, such as those made by surf, wind and thunder, birds, whales, and other animals. To this they added musical selections from different cultures and eras, and spoken greetings from Earth-people in fifty-five languages, and printed messages from President Carter and U.N. Secretary General Waldheim. Each record is encased in a protective aluminum jacket, together with a cartridge and a needle. Instructions, in symbolic language, explain the origin of the spacecraft and indicate how the record is to be played. The 115 images are encoded in analog form. The remainder of the record is in audio, designed to be played at 16-2/3 revolutions per minute. It contains the spoken greetings, beginning with Akkadian, which was spoken in Sumer about six thousand years ago, and ending with Wu, a modern Chinese dialect. Following the section on the sounds of Earth, there is an eclectic 90-minute selection of music, including both Eastern and Western classics and a variety of ethnic music. Once the Voyager spacecraft leave the solar system (by 1990, both will be beyond the orbit of Pluto), they will find themselves in empty space. It will be forty thousand years before they make a close approach to any other planetary system. As Carl Sagan has noted, “The spacecraft will be encountered and the record played only if there are advanced spacefaring civilizations in interstellar space. But the launching of this bottle into the cosmic ocean says something very hopeful about life on this planet.”

Information About the Earth and Its Inhabitants Included on the Record Want to know more about Voyager's record?

The definitive work about the Voyager record is "Murmurs of Earth" by Sagan, Drake, Lomberg et.al. Basically, this book is the story behind the creation of the record, and includes a full list of everything on the record. "Murmurs of Earth", originally published in 1978, was reissued in 1992 by Warner News Media and includes a CD-ROM that replicates the Voyager record. Unfortunately, this book is now out of print, but it is worth the effort to try and find a used copy or browse through a library copy.

Mandatory Pilot Reading

The Port of Entry has been updated with the Current Information. I
won't tell you what it is, except that it's not X-Ray Vision, and
it's not Whiskey Breath. Read it and find out. Recommend procedures
are CHANGED from last year.

http://www.portofentry.org

Basic changes are the Scenic pattern altitude is now 5500' MINIMUM.
If you want to go higher, make it in 500' increments.

Climb and descend OUTSIDE the patterns. Take off, fly away from both
patterns, turn back and enter the Scenic Pattern level at 5500' or
higher. Do not climb or descend while in the Scenic. Exit and return.

Another change is a recommendation to approach the landing pattern
from over the railroad tracks. We moved the runway further out due to
the conflict with the Scenic Pattern and to avoid flying over walk-in
camping.

The Airport is CLOSED at night.

Bring your own tie downs. I don't have extra.

Looking forward to welcoming you all home at Black Rock
International. See you soon!

hand signals

disclaimer: (one should never use signals to signal a plane unless you really know what you are doing. there's probally liability involved about telling them anything, in case you are wrong.)

but the symbol of the man is doing the 'land here' signal. ;)

and most people that need rescuing are often waving their hands over their head, crossing over the top. which is also the sign for 'don't land here'. the irony.

can someone confirm this?

What? Of course, every day is safety day at the airport. But we'll have stations set up, chats about disaster and personal preparedness kits, gps, and more. Speakers in the lounge, etc.

Limes, Rum drinks with lime, Cuba Libre: coke with lime, Lime aid, little green apples, and wasabi sauce.

Wear your florescent lime green and help everyone have a safe day.

Safety Orange also heartily welcomed!

It was one of TigerTiger's great idea (more coming). But I want it. For those who can't find the time or a pilot, we will have a self serve option.

It either involves a (very clean) portapotty.

Or a chair for the pilot, a bench seat, (like out of a car), a blanket and two participants. Might involve 2x4s and some sheets. (4 sheets to the wind? ;)

TUESDAY: eclipse viewing

Ranger Trapper notes that there is a lunar eclipse. It has also been suggested to sacrifice a hippy to prevent a dragon from eating our world, but OSHA hasnt approved it.

http://science.nasa.gov/headlines/y2007/03aug_dreamyeclipse.htm?list143076

The event begins 54 minutes past midnight PDT (0754 UT) on August 28th when the Moon enters Earth's shadow. At first, there's little change. The outskirts of Earth's shadow are as pale as the Moon itself; an onlooker might not even realize anything is happening. But as the Moon penetrates deeper, a startling metamorphosis occurs. Around 2:52 am PDT (0952 UT), the color of the Moon changes from moondust-gray to sunset-red. This is totality, and it lasts for 90 minutes.

To understand why the change occurs, close your eyes and dream yourself all the way to the Moon. Once again, you're standing on a seashore—the Sea of Tranquillity. There's no water. You're surrounded by hundreds of miles of dusty, hardened lava. Overhead hangs Earth, nightside down, completely hiding the Sun behind it. The eclipse is underway.

Snow-Play

A Time of Rememberance, Reflection and Revelry

Join us thursday, august 30th, as the Black Rock Travel Agency hosts Snow-Play, a little soiree held in honor of our late friend, Berk Snow.

Berk was a true citizen of Black Rock City. His gift of flight, and his penchant for offering that gift while adventuring out in the city, are the stuff of legends. We intend to honor Berk the way he lived his life; smiling, laughing and reaching out to everyone he met to share his love of flying.

We will start gathering at the David Best temple at sunset, or thereabouts. We'll be forming a caravan of the people actually camping at the airport about an hour before sunset. when we arrive at the Temple, we will leave the tail-mounted strobe light lit on the airport limo so everyone arriving from elsewhere in the city can locate the group.

Please bring a photo of Berk or a printed story you want to share about him. We will be posting the fotos and stories in the Temple so everyone from BRC can enjoy them before sunday night's burn.

Also please come prepared to be good ambassadors of Burning Aviation as there will be an underlying theme of outreach here, as well as a touch of Irish wake for our good friend Berk. Be ready and willing to share stories, wine and the joy of flying with all who pass by and ask what we're doing. BRTA will provide some snacks and beverages, but we need everyone else to help with this too. Bring a bottle of wine, some food, cold juice, good vodka, whatever you have to share with everyone else who strolls by. We'll have vehicles on-hand to transport coolers, kegs or whatever manifests.

Invite your friends and your campmates, get involved and we'll all spend some time together remembering our friend and spreading a little cheer and goodwill. At some point we'll wrap it all up and head off into Black Rock City filled with good thoughts and happy memories to share, just like Berk did.

Hello Hello,
I am searching for a way to get to BRC! I am an
elementary school teacher in Santa Cruz and school starts the same week
as Burning Man. Sooo..... my only option for going to this wonderufl
gathering is to fly on Friday afternoon, Aug. 31st
(ideally direct from, or near by Santa Cruz to BRC). What do I
do? How do I make this happen? Any suggestions?
Conections? Miracles? Please let me know. I know
that my own spirit and my classroom would be forever
inriched by the inspriation I would gain from
attending this essential event. Love and light to
all!     Sierra

Arrive in style and speed to Burning Man, by way of Black Rock City Spaceport! Ya thats right, flying straight into BRC is one of the most spectacular ways to penetrate the playa. I have room on a small private plane to arrive at the BRC spaceport Wednesday evening. Im leaving from Salinas around 3pm, to arrive just before the spaceport closes for dusk. So this is open to anyone in the the flight path from Salinas to Black Rock City. This includes San Jose, San Francisco, Oakland, Sacramento, ect.
This flight take less than a couple of hours, so you arrive refreshed and ready to party! No drive hangover, or highway zombie syndrome!
This is carry-on luggage flight only, so you must arrange for someone to transport your gear and bikes by ground, ahead of time.
The more people to fly the cheaper it is, but limited seating. And not as expensive as you think!
PM me for cost of the seat. Good luck, and see you on the playa!

Honeymoon Flyover?

My lover and I are getting married at BM during the eclipse.

I've been thinking that it'd be very cool if her and I could join a pilot for a Flyover of BM as a Honey Moon experience at some point during the week. If it could happen I'd make it a surprise for my lover.

I'd like to know how to get this request to the people flying over BM.
Below is a message I've sent out to some people in regards to our Wedding Event on our Art installation.

Cheers
Napalm Dragon

----------------------------------------------------------------
My lover, Snow Dragon and I are getting Married during the Lunar Eclipse this Year.
I've been waiting to announce it until after I'd spoken to the Arts placement about this art platform: http://dorgeyantra.burnbc.com/

It'll be located at "Midnight & The Trash Fence"
We will spend the entire night there.
...Sunset to Sunrise...

I'm building "The Dorge Yantra" to explore the night and leave it there for the rest of us to ponder throughout the week.
It was the first place I took her when she landed on the Playa.

I'd like to invite you to share with us "Something Sacred, Something Beautiful".

Whatever you think that is.
- An object
- A thought
- A performance
- A beer
- Something Naughty

You decide.

Help us be reminded of what will keep us together for years to come.
("Something Sacred, Something Beautiful")

Offer us and our love, sustenance (food - drink), and let us enjoy this special night of celestial union together. It will only happen once.

If you have a ceremony, offering or symbolic gesture of union.
Please offer us the honour of witnessing this.

Those who Play together Stay together.
Feel free to email me: NapalmDragon@NapalmDragon.com

Cheers,
Napalm Dragon

A buddy is not going for this year’s burn I couldn’t talk any hotties into going so once again I’m offering a seat or two on my plane.

I have one ticket available and the airplane cost per seat is $100 each way. Not bad for a Cessna 310 ride to the playa. Major baggage has to go by ground.

Palo Alto to BRC Dates: Monday and Tuesday
BRC to Palo Alto: Flexible Sunday or Monday

BTW Palo Alto is in between San Francisco and San Jose Int’l airports and I’ll work with folks coming from out of the area.

Hello! :)

I'm trying to plan how I'm going to get back from Burning Man this year. I'm going to be really pressed for time and thought that flying to Reno instead of driving would be helpful.

I need to make it to Reno for a 11am flight (need to be there probably at 9am'ish) on Monday (Sept. 3) Does anyone know anyone flying that would have space for me? It'd just be me and a backpack.

I am an avid burner, the Punani Trim Parlor, and an emcee of the Sunday, Sept 2nd Summer of Love Celebration in G.G. Park. I will pay all gas, landing fees, car rental.etc. plus up to 2 ALL ACCESS BACKSTAGE passes to SOL. I would need to be at SOL by noon in GG Park and could leave by 5-6pm, goal being to be back for Temple burn. We could be......." the dusty ones" :)

Burner Pilot - East Coast Curious - Seeks same

Hey Y'alls,

I'm spending the month of July in Washington, North Carolina and a week in Rochester, NY at the in-laws (eek!). I would really, really love to do some East Coast flying during that time. I have a club membership at Pitt-Greenville airport (PGV), and can go fly circles by myself in their 172R or 152, but would rather meet up with Mid-Atlantic pilots and swap Playa stories. You're welcome to come to PGV and pick me up, or I can come to you. I do some serious Eastern North Carolina pulled pork BBQ (if you know what that is, you are now slobbering on your keyboard) which is a good alternate afternoon activity when the storms roll in.

For our more Northern Playa brothers and sisters, I'll be seeking same in Rochester from 7/18 to 7/23. I have not been able to dig up a club in upstate NY to rent from, so I'm looking for owners only to come get me. I get desperately bored in Rochester and would be willing to try experimentals or twins to alleviate my malaise.

Contact me through tribe if interested. Or post reply here.
Old Wall-mounted telephones for Intercom

We need an intercom between the Customs Desk in the Terminal Building and the Box Office. This is for the BRC Airport, of course. I can easily purchase a modern intercom, and will probably buy one as a back-up unit. But it would be so cool to have an intercom made out of wall-mounted telephones, like the white courtesy telephones in mundane world airports.

I've found some for sale, but at too high a price for rotary dial. May have to settle for more modern push-button style. It is IDEAL to have two identical phones (identical hardware, color doesn't matter). Does anyone have an old phone or preferrably a pair? We could perhaps use a wall-mount in the Terminal and desk phone in the office.

Once we have a couple of phones, we'll need someone with electronic skills to make it work. Lots of circuit diagrams for telephone intercoms on the web. Any volunteers want to tackle this job? Doesn't matter where you live, we can ship equipment. It DOES need to be completed and installed during setup. I'll be departing San Jose on August 17th and would like to take it with me.

p.s. I first submitted this as a "request" or listing, but I can't access the listing, and have heard the same from others. This is message repeat as a posting.

Berk

OK Everybody,

WIth a deep breath filled with love and sadness:

Berk and Suzie's C-172 was located today, Sunday, about 6 miles north of the Johnson Creek airstrip they'd departed for a day flight from on Thursday. The aircraft was broken up and Suzie apparently managed to climb up on a ridge, where where she was rescued this afternoon by a lifeflite helicopter. She has a broken vertebrae and has been out there for 3 nights...

Berk died in the crash. They apparently became ensnared in a box or narrow canyon and could not climb out or turn. I'm told that he never regained consciousness. Whether it was a premonition or not, Berk posted about his concern for just this event on another pilot website just 10 days ago, as usual looking out for all of us.

I am so sorry to be telling you this about the finest person in all of Black Rock. There will be a link available tomorrow afternoon that will bring you to KMUD's podcast, our local community radio station here of which Berk was on the board and had a radio show. I will send it as soon as it's up.

I really want to thank you Bob, for all the phone calls and info you were able to provide in the face of CAP's silence.

Love to all of you, fly easy this week. Marko

Here is Bob's email from the BRC list today.

Burning Man Aviators, I am posting from McCall, Idaho:

A Burning Man Pilot, Berk Snow is missing. Berk and Suzie flew into the Johnson Creek Idaho airstrip for a Back Country Pilot get together last week in his 1958 Cessna 172. They flew out late Thursday morning for a day flight and have not been seen since. So far as we know, he did not mention a destination. Pilots in the local area have been looking since Friday morning. The sheriff was notified Friday afternoon and started a ground search. Berk left his camping outfit at Johnson Creek. All airports within his fuel range have been checked.
I talked to the sheriff yesterday and several CAP pilots today. No ELT signal nor sign of them or the plane have been found. The CAP has four planes up today doing a grid search.
May all of us concentrate our thoughts on a positive outcome.

(So first let me put 10 zillion disclaimers in no part authorized by or affiliated with the org, ESD, Rangers, the Airport Dept or any one else with any credibility. Maybe it will be a sign at the door. ) But I'm interested in doing something very silly. DIY Medical

There is already the Ambience Ambulance, Heebee GeeBee Healers and more.

The Qwack Shack:

So my art project is a Gazebo. It's smaller than a costco tent. I will have sheets on it for adding a little shade. And for drawing on.

'I'm not a doctor, but I play on TV' Shrine:
Bones, hottie Dr. Simon from Firefly/ Serenity, and Dr. Julian from Deep Space Nine, Dr. Drake Remore (Joey Tribiani on Friends), Rick Springfield on General Hospital, Quincy, and more.

How to combat the Marsian Plague, etc. (will get some Star Trek episodes or something.) Use a glucose tester (without the needles) as some fancy scanner. Who knew that pixie sticks were actually 'THE Antidote' ?

Silly things like what to do in the case of Smuggled drugs in condoms breaking.

Playing Doctor ;)
(Medical fetish is a recognized tract of fetish. Not mine but there is cutting and lots of other things beyond me.)

(Rope/ knot tying.) While I learned some of mine in the boyscouts there's also the Shibari rope fetish community. I will have instructions on how to make the 'Butterfly' and the 'Bunny' knots. Guaranteed to impress small children if you don't have a balloon animal tying clown handy.

DIY Medical (bandaids, kool aid?)

The Board Game 'Operation' (if you're really bored)

Not a 'green cross', not the 'red cross', maybe the tangerine cross. or the periwinkle star. pink hearts! yellow moons! orange stars! and green clovers! oh never mind that's my breakfast cereal.

So let me know what you think.

Now accepting donations. You know those crutches you have in the back of the closet. That neck collar you only wore to get a bigger settlement. That sling you wear to get sympathy from the ladies. Give it up.

For unknown reasons, I'm taking the time to fill out a survey sent to me in snail mail. It's asking a bunch of questions about purchasing aviation products, and do I regularly read publications such as Professional Pilot, or Business & Commercial Aviation. My answers are mostly "no". The interesting question is "What is your most frequented website related to general aviation? No doubt about it, http://brc-aviation.tribe.net wins out over all others.

Got a question.

I know of a theme camp that would really dig doing a customs inspector shift or 2 at BRC Int'l.

Their gig - militaristic costumes and Mutant vehicles, Interrogations, Searches, Rambunctious merrymaking, and other fun stuff. Semi-crazy, semi-wild, lotsa fun.

Who are these crazy, ludicrous bunch of Eastern-Bloc Miscreants? Apokiliptika. You may have been interrogated there yourself (3:00 and "A") at sometime over the past couple years.

Anyway, we (our fearless camp leader, Killbuck and I) were discussing it, and we both think it would be a *really* kewl way to do a "greeters" shift and still be able to have some artistic freedom - more so than at the gate. We could put a team together, and terrorize, er, indoctrinate, er, interrogate, um, *greet* the new arrivals, make sure they have ze proper papers, search for contraband, liberate, er, confiscate excess alcohol, Boa critters, Stray elephants, and what have you, dispense Playa Martinis to weary travelers (PBR W/ Olive), etc. (BY the way... what HAVE you in zat fliggit bag, darlink, eh???)

Also - they're a pretty conscientious bunch of burners. There is an actual aviatrix-in-training on the team who is planning on getting her SEL ticket prior to the burn (God, Cash, and FAA inspector willing) and has been around various AC for a while, plus, as I said, we are a pretty conscientious group, and can follow rules as necessary (No, you *don't* have to move the prop to inspect the cowling, damnit...)... Agreeable to training, and have even been known to burn blini and bacon on occasion... (If ya don't know, blini are Russian pancakes...)

Anyway... Wanted to throw this out there to whoever is the Minister of Immigration, Transport, and Windsock Alignment for their perusal, laughter, moderate turbulance, er, scorn, and possible consideration.

Thanks...
bb Sue

Originally posted to the BM Aviator lists, but I know many people drop off those lists in the winter. So, apologies if it seems like a cross-post but this does contain some official info, partially covered by my ramblings.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Sitting here today I am reminiscing about the fun and frivolity of the
BRTA Awards Ceremony 2006. I recall sharing the many firsts we
experienced at BM last year;
First time having 100+ aircraft
First Spaceport Terminal building
First jet landing
First static aircraft display
First time I hosted the awards ceremony without Agent Meshugganah. (never again!)
First time I hosted said ceremony w/o fishnet stockings and a miniskirt. (never, ever again!)
As BM07 approaches our village sees more change on the horizon, and
doubtless more Firsts. Change is good, and vital to growth. Il est
inevitable.
A while back I decided that '06 would be my last year as UnicomMander.
I knew the time had come to hand the mic over to someone else, and
pass along all the fun and rewarding effort that position entails. And
since I will be in Spain this summer crewing the European Regional
Burn (Nowhere), I just won't be around much in the weeks before the
Big Burn. So, beginning in 2007, there will be a new DJ in town, and a
new voice on KBRC, 122.9 on your FM dial.
I want to thank Lissa for trusting me when I pitched her this crazy
UNICOM idea after the 2003 event had all of us grasping for solutions.
We had UNICOM before that, of course. But when I proposed to Lissa
that I would create procedures, setup some structures, cultivate &
organize a volunteer staff and generally turn UNICOM into a vital
resource, I saw a familiar look in her eye. It said, "ohmigod, why did
it have to be DragonFly?" She could tell it was a good idea, but I saw
the fear in her face. Most of you know me, can you blame her?
But, Le Corps de Aviators turned out en-masse and made it easy for me.
You are the reason it worked then, works now, and will work in the
future. Merci beaucoup!!
If you're interested in applying for the position of BRC UnicomMander,
contact TigerTiger. If you're interested in hearing some of the
reasons why you should, or should not, assume this mantle, write to me
directly. I'll be happy to reinforce your worst fears. ;^)
Bon Courage!!!
I'm looking for a pilot headed to brc from Oregon or further north.  I'll be on the playa with DPW before the event, but the week before I have to get to the oregon coast to do a catering job and then back to brc.  I can contribute fuel and a good time.  Anyone interested?
Questions about Skydiving
I've seen several videos of people parachuting/sailing into the Playa, and am fairly sure I saw a couple IRL last year. (But who can be sure with all the other wierd things that were falling out of the sky that day...)
A friend of mine is very interested in such an activity and I'm trying to find out for her what she needs to beforehand to make that a possibility.  Is there some kind of certification process, I'd imagine.  Also, is that something pilots already do, take people up for jumps, or is it something you've got to have your own plane for?  And is there any kind of registration or notification with BRC she'd have to obtain?
If anyone can answer these questions I'd greatly appreciate it.
WIth Love,
Zairian
Camp Theme
Teacher: So does anyone have any ideas for the theme?
Squeeky: Ooooh! oooh! Ohhh! I do. We could do this, and then....
Teacher: I mean anyone besides squeeky have anything to say?
(grasshoppers)
Teacher: okay, go ahead squeeky.
Well! In pulling it into a environmental kind of theme, I think of a kind of lush environment. A tropical island. A little bottle of rum and thou, kinda place.
We might be able to do something like LOST. We are stuck there and can not get any additional supplies besides what we find there.
This kinda pulls the airport into in a bit.
It also has a very simple theme to expand on. Tiki. Gilligan's Island. Survivor. It also incorporates the theme of the pineapple, which is a
traditional symbol of hospitality. Pineapple is also a common safe word in s & m circles. I mean, so I hear. ;)
Residents of an island like this. The Millionaire. The Movie Star. The Professor. and Mary Ann. okay, okay forget that.
An easy think is the custom of Aloha Friday. Wearing hawaiian shirts. And I don't think you can argue with swimwear. Or no wear.
And monkeys live on the islands. And we love monkeys. And anyone from the underwater theme would be right at home. Especially the art car with the lightbulb hanging over his face, the dangler.
And santa! He needs a place to vacation before the season starts up again.
And tinkerbell lived in the forest with peter pan, and pirates. And so it's a place that faeries would like to hang out. There's a certain magic.
The only thing is that this is a spaceport. So if say Captn Kirk crashed onto this tropical island. That any kind of aliens would be welcome.
Teacher: Well, thank you squeeky. That's quite a world you've got painted there.
Anyone else?
JOKES:
Agent: Do you have any contraband on you?
Participant: (sweat) uhhh.... duuuhhh. ohhhh. (fumbling in pockets)
Agent: Belly button lint? FEATHER BOAS, perhaps? The dreaded pistachio or deadly peanut in it's itsy bitsy bomb shell of DOOM?!?!?!?
Agent: If you do not have enough contraband (besides what's listed in the guide) don't worry it will be provided for you. Just ask your campmates.
(ba dum bum!)
Well, that's my version but let's hear yours. (It's probably funnier ;)
You can WIN.....????  (what, i don't know.) Tons of Fabulous Prizes! or What's Behind Door number 2! (brooms and janitorial supplies excluded)
okay, well i was thinking about putting together a "schtick" book. since sometimes we're playing around greeting them. then the next shift has to start from scratch. it's always been great when i've been there.
THEME:
also, don't we often have a theme to our customs? i know there have been angels and devils one year. hari krishnas.
do we have something with an environmental theme? something to do with LOST? or tropical environment? gilligan's island?
post here your bad ideas and tribe can contabulate them and spit them up, i mean spit them back at you.
or we'll pass them on to our resident cruise director, julie (or the male jules) if anyone volunteers for that job.
(Did I hear a volunteer?!?!?!!?)
Really dumb question
OK, keep in mind that I design autopilots for large commercial aircraft (737, BAE-146, MD-11, etc). I'm used to worrying if the power drops < 0.5 V.  If the passenger in seat 3A notices the olive move in his martini as we do an approach and landing, I ain't done my job. Keeping this in mind,
How the hell do you keep an aircraft flightworthy through a week of Playa weather?? This has bugged me the last 7 times I've been, and I've never managed to get out to the airport to ask. Do you duct-tape all the pitot tubes and air intakes? Doesn't playa dust grind into cables, pulleys, and sticky grease points? I can't even imagine what it does to the delicate, virginal (though admittedly toy-like) avionics equipment on-board these small aircraft.
'splain to this groundling how you prep the beast for the week, and then have the cajones to fly it out of there. Inquiring minds want to know.
Much grass,
Newspaper Photog Would Like to Get a Quick Aerial
After trying for six years to get my paper, the Las Vegas Sun, to cover Burning Man, I finally convinced them that since I go anyway they may as well run a package of photos when I get back. One shot I would like to get is an aerial because I don't think most of our readers understand BM or the immensity of it.
What would the best way be to get a quick ride? I know it's a late request but they just decided a couple days ago to do this. I can offer my photography in trade, or maybe I could make one of my kids go to the airport and help do the dishes.
I'm heading out early tomorrow (Sunday) and I'll likely check my email one last time when I hit Reno. If someone could drop me a line or give me a call I would greatly appreciate it. I'll also check back on this list.
A years supply of chocolate for BM AIR RT hookup
Hey all,
I'm an old time burner trying to get a BM RT going for my girlfriend and I to the burn this year.  Normally I go to the playa three times, once the first day the playa opens, during the event, and at the very end to take down the Folding Time tower.  As timing would have it, I'm up to my ankles in chocolate while building out a new factory and can't spare the time to go.  But I'm jonesing for that dust pretty bad and am hoping for something to magically come through.
I believe Tiger Tiger posted a message up on this list recently regarding my situation.  I'm not just joining the list to send out a ping for any availability.
We're trying to do a flyby at the very end of the week for an in and out quickie.  Friday 1st or Sat morning the 2nd and return on Sunday 3rd.  We're in San Francisco but can drive to a relatively close airport.
I know this is asking for a miracle, but after all, it's Burning Man.
If you know of anyone who can help, please pass the word.  To sweeten the pot, anyone who find us the flights, I'll gladly provide them with years supply of killer premium chocolate.
Thanks,
Fingers crossed!
Playa Fuzz
Does anybody know about a jail near the airport?!?
Read on:
COPS on the Playa - READ THIS!!
undercover cops CAN and WILL lie to protect their identity...be VERY
paranoid!!
http://www.flexyourrights.org/frequently_asked_questions
you are NOT allowed to do ANYTHING illegal on the Playa. would you do
it on the streets of your own town - out in the open? (Hollywood and
Amsterdam not included) the Playa is a city - in America.
*don't forget this*
if you do so much as light up (even in the middle of the open playa -
they use nightscopes now - NOT kidding) or you serve someone who is
UNDERAGE alcohol...you are running the risk of being ticketed.
in order for you to stay at the event, you'll have to pay the ticket
at the makeshift jail next to the Airport where they fingerprint AND
photograph you. if you cannot pay or you don't have a friend who
will, you have to leave the Playa. NO EXCEPTIONS.
also, you need to carry your IDENTIFICATION on your person at ALL
times. imagine this (my friend had this happen): you get ticketed but
they need your ID. well, you've got handcuffs on and can't open your
cardoor to get your I.D. out of the glove compartment. also, they're
not really sure...if they took the cuffs off...would you freak out or
run away? well, of course, the law is MORE than happy to help out.
they open your glove compartment and find a big bag of mushrooms!! oh
shit. now you have a ticket for possession AND ALSO for intent to
distribute. now you're super fucked!! if only you would have used
your head.
sooo...if ANYONE asks you for drugs on the Playa...take a step back
and at the top of your lungs yell, "HEY EVERYONE...this person is
either STUPID or he's a NARC. stay away from him - he just asked me
for drugs!!" if they're just stupid - they will learn a lesson. if
it's a NARC - at least people know to avoid them in the area or they
might be watched by this person. even TRADING drugs is illegal...FYI.
the cops DO serve a purpose on the Playa, they can save your ass.
they caught a rapist last year who fled into a nearby camp. they keep
the peace and they follow the rules - THEY ARE JUST DOING THEIR JOBS.
be nice to them.
shut your RV door - they have to ask permission to enter. zip your
tent up - same rule applies. if they smell marijuana, they have
probable cause to enter without your permission, although it's more
difficult to do as they need to get a warrant. you don't have to let
them in without one.
you have the right to resist a search politely. you can say, "i'm
sorry but i never consent to any searches." whether or not you have
anything on your person, it's your right to say NO. they can get a
warrant and make you consent to a search, but it takes alot of time
and if you're nice to them, they'll probably leave you alone.
if your friend gets hassled, keep your mouth shut. don't interfere
because you can get ticketed for that, too. if you're caught with
something, don't say anything to incriminate yourself. ask for a
lawyer if you think you might need one. tickets aren't too horribly
expensive - $250 to $550 unless they arrest you, then it's more
because there's usually bail involved and for that they'll take you
into Reno for the night.
LISTEN UP PEOPLE - they drive Art Cars, for chrissakes!! they're Hot
Little Burner Chicks and they're dressed up in costumes. they've been
doing this FOR YEARS - and they probably have better costumes than
YOU do.
don't be a fucking idiot. don't party with people you don't already
know. they can befriend you, get some good info from you and arrest
you hours later. they can do drugs with you legally, and send the
cops to cuff you when you part company. they CAN and they WILL. don't
think you can "get away with it" because they're everywhere.
when you see them, say HI. if you have a BM trinket that you think
they might like (they all want trinkets from BM to give their friends
- it's a privilege to work at BM ;o) offer them one. they might offer
you a cool BLM blinky-pin. don't be a dick because you'll make it
worse for the rest of us. use your head, be very POLITE when you see
them, and remember they're just doing their jobs...you might make it
easier for the rest of us.
if they think of us more as humans instead of "Burners" they might
get a little lazy and not be so gung-ho about ticketing us. it can't
hurt. be safe!!
Burningman Google Earth Project....... NEEDS YOUR HELP!!!!!
Burningman has a new and important official project in the works... and we need the help of the flying community!
Burningman is working with Google to create an powerful interactive 3d map of BRC. This will contain the information for the "What, where, when", theme camp maps, 3d models of the Man and large artworks and will even have modules of drag and drop camp architecture that  can be used to space plan your own camp.
We will need a high resolution survey done of BRC. This will form the base map of the project and must be a large, stitched together file taken straight down. We are working on super positioning software the will allow super resolution limited only by the source file (thats you!) This may be seen by potentially millions of users.
I know that there are technical problems in doing such a survey, but I feel sure that one of you must be up for the challenge. After all, if David Best can build a temple out of scrap wood then I am sure that you guys can figure out how to take a set of photos of the city:)
PLEASE HELP WITH THIS PROJECT!!!!
Contact me, Andrew Johnstone at bmearth@burningman.com or (510) 823 7320
Get a preview of the project at     http://bmearth.burningman.com/
